Just off the southwestern tip of Sardinia there is a tiny island called Sant'Antioco and it is here that you will find a small corner of Paradise called Calasetta.
Calasetta is a small fishing village which is rapidly becoming a very popular tourist destination. The indented coastline, white sand beaches and crystal clear water make it a perfect summer holiday destination. The town itself is small and lively with the village square being the centre of everything. All the main roads lead off the square and are lined with excellent restaurants, bars and shops, all open late into the night during the summer season.
Throughout the summer there is entertainment in the square and holiday makers can join the locals dancing the night away to rock bands, watching a classical concert or staring in amazement as the local girls demonstrate the traditional dances.
There is a busy and thriving port in Calasetta next to the old fishing harbour. The marina is filled with boats, most of them local but there are also a lot of visiting yachts, either on their way somewhere else or specifically to spend a few weeks holidaying in this special place. Among the pretty little local Latina boats you will see large super yachts complete with uniformed crew. The port is surrounded by bars, cafes and restaurants and it is an exhilarating and interesting place to spend a few hours. Every week there is a market there where you can buy everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to beach towels, bikinis and household goods.
If you don't want to spend all of your holiday on the beach there are many easily accessible places to visit from Calasetta. The Island of Sant'Antioco is small and it is possible to explore most of it over a few days. The main town is called Sant'Antioco and there are many coastal villages that make a pleasant day out. Calasetta is immediately opposite another island called San Pietro and there are regular ferry trips across to the main town of Carloforte. This is a pretty little town which is quite up market with some interesting little shops and large selection of restaurants.
While the town of Calasetta is pretty, bustling and a perfect holiday destination the one thing that makes this place so special is the people who live there. The residents of Calasetta have to be among the warmest, friendliest and most accommodating people on earth.
The island of Sant'Antioco is attached to mainland Sardinia by a causeway with the nearest airport being Cagliari.
