Seismic Activity

Italy is situated at the meeting point of the Eurasian Plate and the African Plate, leading to considerable seismic and volcanic activity. However, the kind of seismic activity leading to earthquakes is rare in the Alps and the Po valley; it is infrequent but occasionally strong in the Alpine foothills; and it may be catastrophic in the central and southern Apennines (as in 1980) and in Sicily. There is a long history of earthquakes in Italy. The most notable events over the last century are listed below:
