Medio Campidano is another province of Sardinia which was only formed a few years ago, it was created from part of the province of Cagliari in 2005. It borders the Sardinian Sea to the west, Oristano to the north, Cagliari to the east and Carbonia-Inglesias to the south. The province has two capital cities, Sanluri and Villacidro.
Sanluri lies in an extremely fertile area with it's city centry situated within medieval walls. It's main feature is the Castle of Eleonora d'Arborea which was built between 1197 and refurbished in 1355. The castle is in excellent condition and is the only remaining example of medieval architecture in Sardinia. Sanluri is also famous for its local bread, civraxu, which is made from hard wheat flour.
Villacidro is in a panoramic position 900 feet above sea level in a mountainous region which is heavily wooded with many streams and waterfalls. The waterfalls in Medio Campidano are some of the most important in Sardinia with Muru Mannu being the highest and Sa Spendula being the most spectacular.
This small province has a very short coastline but the beaches and sea are stunning and the whole coastal area is known as the Costa Verde. These beaches are famous and some of the best you will find, running from north to south they are: Capo Frasca, Pistis, Torre dei Corsari, Porto Palma, Babari, Funtanazza, Gutturu Flumini, Portu Maga, Piscinas, Scivu and Capo Pecora.
Other towns of interest in this region are Guspini which has an interesting archaelogical site called Neopolis as well as some nuraghes which are in good condition. The old mines at Montevecchio are also interesting as well as the two giants' graves which can be found in Gonnosfanadiga.
